Valerie Smith-Griffin commented on Joe Buscaino's blog post New Bike Lanes on Capitol and Westmont
"Extremely ill conceived plan. Unfortunately, San Pedro has others that have failed - this one needs to go to the graveyard with them. LOUSY planning and I can only imagine when more housing goes in on Western at Ponte (you fill in the blank) "

Lee Dworshak commented on Joe Buscaino's blog post New Bike Lanes on Capitol and Westmont
"All the whys and wherefores are great Joe, but this plan was ill conceived and a surprise to most of us who live in the area.  To take two major well-functioning routes that connect Gaffey to Western and reduce them from two lanes…"

John Stammreich commented on Joe Buscaino's blog post New Bike Lanes on Capitol and Westmont
"All of the above sounds nice, but unless the neighborhood council literally went door-to-door with fliers about the 2010 Bicycle Plan implementation, the proper inputs by the affected surrounding communities was not effectively collected. As…"

Why I’m Supporting Eric Garcetti for Mayor of L.A.

A little over a year ago, the voters of San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway and Watts took a chance by electing a political newcomer - their neighborhood cop - to represent them on the Los Angeles City Council.I came to City Hall as an outsider with no experience in politics; just a passion for my hometown, and a desire to make the communities I represent a better place for residents and businesses alike. As a Senior Lead Officer in the LAPD, I saw firsthand how little things,…See More

Report on Petroleum Tanks Including Rancho LPG in the Harbor Area

Several months ago my office coordinated a special meeting of the Public Safety Committee to discuss the safety of the Rancho LPG facility and similar petroleum storage and refinery facilities in my district.  I wanted to address community concerns about the perceived level of danger about having so many petroleum facilities in close proximity to our homes, neighbors, and families.  At the end of the meeting, we asked the Chief Legislative Analyst - the CLA - to issue a report on what…See More

Celebrating my FIRST anniversary as your Councilman!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since I stood with my family, raised my right hand, and took the oath of office, being sworn in as the new councilman for the 15th District. It has been challenging, rewarding, exhausting, frustrating, and incredibly fun all at the same time. Just like a roller coaster, there have been ups and downs, but there is no question, this has been the ride of my life. Not a day goes by where I do not reflect on how humbled and grateful I am by the trust and…See More

A little about me
I attended Leland Street Elementary, Dana Middle School, and San Pedro High School. I excelled academically and athletically, while participating in the arts and serving as Senior Class President. After graduating, I attended Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, transferred to UCLA, and graduated with honors from California State – Dominguez Hills with a Bachelors Degree in Communications. I was hired by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1996.

All of my life I have worked hard for our community. During college I coordinated the youth sports programming, oversaw the adult co-ed sports leagues, and served as the day, summer, and winter camp director at the Bogdanovich Park Recreation Center. In 1997, I completed my training at the Los Angeles Police Academy and have since worked patrol and administrative assignments including the Office of Chief of Police, West Traffic Division, and Emergency Operations Division. I am currently on leave from the Harbor Area as a Senior Lead Officer while I run for City Council representing the 15th District. I am on the front lines, keeping our neighborhoods safe.

As an active member of our community, I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles Harbor, on the San Pedro YWCA’s Racial Justice Committee, and am active with Mary Star of the Sea Parish and various Italian American organizations. I have been appointed to the advisory council for the Los Angeles Watts Summer Games.

At work serving our community, I have created the Department’s first Teen Community Police Advisory Board, an organization that works with teens to problem solve and break the barriers between police and teenagers. My concept of bringing youths’ perspectives to problem solving with the police department will be implemented Citywide in the summer of 2011.

Recognizing the link between crime and economic development, I have been active in establishing and promoting a website for job seekers in the greater Port of Los Angeles area an also serve on the Green Advisory Committee of the California Conservation Corps where I advocate for the creation of green jobs and maritime high technology jobs in the Harbor Area.

My wife Geralyn, an educator in the district and I, are raising their two children, and iyr dog, Rocco, in San Pedro.
