LAKEWOOD - In dire need of a spark with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, San Pedro High softball would look to sophomore right fielder Cayla Ezelle to provide one.
Ezelle would do just that in short order.
On only two pitches, Ezelle would crush a towering solo home run to left field to kick-start an eventual three-run inning for the Pirates as they would go on to defeat Firebaugh of Lynwood, 5-0 in the third place game of the Artesia Tournament at Artesia High School. It would be San Pedro's fifth straight win and first third-place tournament win this season after two prior third place losses in the Downey and Whittier Tournaments.
The game was called in the fifth inning due to the tournament's one hour, 20-minute time limit.
San Pedro (11-7 overall) took a 2-0 lead on RBI-singles from sophomore catcher Alexa Ponce and sophomore seconc baseman Johnie Cortez in the bottom of the second inning, then Ezelle's homer got things rolling in the third.
Sophomore left fielder Taylor Richter would drive home junior center fielder Doreen Corella on a sacrifice fly, then junior third baseman Jocelyn Kondash drove in junior shortstop Angelina Boskovich on a ground out to second base for the Pirates, who will resume Marine League play on Wednesday at home against Narbonne of Harbor City.
Junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera (6-6) hurled a two-hit shutout with no walks and five strikeouts for San Pedro.
