My neighbor had a visitor over the weekend, who left his car unlocked. With his laptop and check book in sight. Needless to say it only took a couple of minutes for someone to come by and take them. 30 minutes later the thief was already attempting to cash one of his checks for a hefty amount!
*NOTE* - the "victim" says he is pretty sure this was a young female (as he saw a female near his car) and that the thief is a smoker, as he could smell lingering smoke in his car, and he is a non-smoker. ..... the laptop was a MAC.
I am saddened that this happened right on my street, only 2 houses down. I wish I had been sitting on my lawn watching everything.
I will follow up if I can find out the description of the thief, other than "a young woman" (per the bank).
NOT ACCEPTABLE!
**Interesting followup note** - I just learned today that right before the "victim" got to the police station to report the crime, a young couple were there to "give" the station a laptop. I don't have this information first hand, but the couple reportedly said something to the police like "you'll know who this belongs to". Well, the police wouldn't take the bag/laptop so the couple left. One minute later, the "victim" went into the police station and they had an "ah ha" moment. How sad!
The girl in that couple was a young, heavy set girl with lots of tattoos.

But this is what we hear from the police all the time - most crimes are that of opportunity. Locking your car door and leaving valuable out of sight - just like locking up the house when you leave - cuts down on a lot of heartache. Great reminder.
