One of the most famous San Pedrans out in the world today is 26-year-old Misty Copeland, described by many accounts as the first African American female soloist for the American Ballet Theater. She recently did an interview with Travis Smiley on PBS and talked about her experience performing a sexy pas de deux to the hit "The Beautiful One" with legendary musician Prince after he tracked her down and asked her to be a part of his show.
"He said he thought it was a perfect song for a ballerina," Copeland recalled. "I flew out and met him on the set. It was just the two of us, besides the lighting guys, and they put me in this gorgeous dress and he said, 'Do whatever you want, whatever you feel with the music.' "she told the New York Post.
