In the summer of 1994, as a journalism student and wannabe photographer at El Camino College in Torrance, I made a photograph that was published on the front page of the local newspaper.
The photo was of the 10-foot statue of Mary which is mounted on top of the Mary Star of the Sea tower, her arms outstretched toward the Port of Los Angeles.
A gift from the parish fisherman in 1961, the statue was brought down to earth for restoration, making it available to view up close for the first time in a generation.
I submitted the photo to the San Pedro News Pilot which ran it on the front page of the paper. The News Pilot served the community for seventy years from 1928 until it closed its doors in 1998.
Seeing my photo on the front page of the San Pedro News Pilot made my year and energized me to pursue my career as a photojournalist. A few months later, I photographed OJ Simpson as he fled from police and then the largest great white shark caught off the West coast of the United States, a 17'3, 4500 pound beast.
Proving my value as a photographer and as a content producer for the community, I went on to freelance at the Daily Breeze, got my first staff job at a newspaper in Illinois, followed by jobs in Northern California and Orange County, before eventually returning to the Daily Breeze where I spent six years photographing the Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, Angels, the Academy Awards and most important, my community, San Pedro.
Had it not been for the San Pedro News Pilot, I might have never enjoyed a successful career as a photojournalist, traveled the world and met many of the most famous people on the planet.
I left the Daily Breeze in 2005 to become a web producer while continuing to work as an independent photographer for the Associated Press and corporate clients.
Today, I am investing a career's worth of experience toward bringing back the San Pedro News Pilot and returning a central voice to the community of San Pedro, while creating a venue that will inspire a whole new generation of content producers.
The new San Pedro News Pilot is not your father's fish wrap. In its 2.0 version, the News Pilot will empower the entire community to participate by letting its members produce the content and drive the conversations in the community, allowing you to write stories and blogs and upload photos and videos.
Without having to wait for a reporter to highlight your event or accomplishment, members of the new San Pedro News Pilot will have complete control of their public presence.
I am a strong believer in the power of "voice." That's why
SanPedroNewsPilot.com was created. This time the NewsPilot will serve the community even more effectively than the original because of your voice, the voice of the community, the voices of San Pedro now have a platform for discussion with each other and beyond.
I welcome all San Pedrans to
SanPedroNewsPilot.com. This is your place to share everything that makes San Pedro what it is.
