SP's Elijah Gaines Earns Second Straight All-City Section Honor

One more postseason honor was bestowed upon San Pedro High boys basketball senior guard Elijah Gaines, as he was named to the All-CIF Los Angeles City Section Division I team.

Gaines, a three-year varsity player and two-sport standout (also on the volleyball team) who averaged 16.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.4 steals, 1.0 blocks for the Pirates this season, was an All-City Division I second team selection, which matches last year's All-City Division II second team selection. San Pedro finished 15-12 overall, 5-7 in the Marine League, a third place three-way tie with Carson and Gardena.

Port Of Los Angeles basketball got four All-City selections.

Senior guard Jayln Morgan was an All-City Division IV/V first team selection after averaging 16.6 points and 2.2 rebounds for the Polar Bears, who went 12-12 this season. Morgan scored a career-high 28 points against New Millennium of Carson in a 62-60 nonleague win for the Polar Bears on December 14.

POLA's girls basketball team, who went 19-7 this season on the way to their first City Section Division IV/V semifinal berth in school history, was rewarded with three All-City selections.

Junior forward Angela Wade averaged 16 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.2 steals a game for the Polar Bears, and made history by being the first Polar Bear basketball athlete, male or female, to score 30 points in a game, which she did in a 69-46 victory over New Millennium on December 14. Wade was also a key member for the girls volleyball team who made it to their first City Section final.

Junior forward Alex Espinoza (9.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.4 steals a game) and sophomore guard Mayan Rodriguez (6.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists a game) were also chosen to the All-City Division IV/V team.

Congratulations to all the All-City selections from both San Pedro and Port Of Los Angeles High.
