SPHS Boys & Girls Basketball Teams End Long Losing Streaks

WILMINGTON - It was a long time coming for the San Pedro High boys and girls basketball teams.

Wednesday, January 9 was the last time both won in the Marine League against rival Banning of Wilmington, and since then, the boys went on a six-game losing streak, the girls a five-game losing streak. Well what do you know... both streaks came to an end on Wednesday, and ironically, both came against Banning.

First, the boys team would jump to a 22-point halftime lead, then held off a late charge from the host Pilots to win the league contest, 70-60, which also swept the season series with their Harbor Area neighbors. The girls team played in the nightcap afterwards, and would go on to defeat Banning, 42-28 even without star sophomore point guard Rita Fiorenza, who must sit out a week due to a lung infection.

Career highs in scoring from juniors Quincy Thomas (24 points) and James Fish (17 points) helped the Pirates (14-9 overall, 4-5 league) end their long-suffering streak that included a one-point loss to Gardena, a four-point loss to Narbonne of Harbor City, another one-point upset loss to King-Drew Medical of Los Angeles earlier this week, and a two-point loss to Carson where the Colts hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Thomas, who also had a game-high 14 rebounds, highlighted the first half with a breakaway slam dunk.

Elijah Gaines added 14 points and 13 rebounds for San Pedro, which pulled away with a 23-9 second quarter that led to a dominant 42-20 halftime advantage. Banning dropped to 11-14 overall, 2-6 in league.

In the girls game, junior forward Cheyenne Alvarez had 12 points and seven steals to lead visiting San Pedro (5-9, 3-7) to the season sweep of winless Banning. Sophomore guard Emily Iacono was the only other Pirate in double-figure scoring with 10 points.

San Pedro broke open a close game by outscoring the Pilots 21-7 in the fourth quarter.

Both San Pedro basketball teams host Narbonne on Friday, girls play at 5:30pm, boys at 7pm.
