Another tragic death from a skateboarding accident! I don't know how school authorities, parents and/or police can stop this but I hope something/someone finds a way... MB
From Donna Littlejohn, Daily Breeze:
"A Lancaster teen has died from injuries suffered over the weekend while he was skateboarding downhill near Averill Park in San Pedro, county coroner's officials said Monday.
Caleb Daniel Simpson, 15, reportedly was skating with his cousin and others Saturday in the 1500 block of 14th Street - near Weymouth Avenue at the south border of Averill Park - and traveling in excess of 40 mph when he reportedly collided with another skater.
He was not wearing a helmet.
A San Pedro couple, Christie Reyes and her husband, called 911 when they came on the scene shortly after the 3:30 p.m. accident. Christie Reyes said the teen appeared to be unconscious and was convulsing when he was taken away by ambulance.
He died at 5 a.m. Sunday at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance. The Coroner's Department has not determined a cause of death.
According to CBS2 News in Los Angeles, Simpson was a popular sophomore football player at Paraclete High School. Grief counselors were on hand Monday at the Catholic school to meet with students.
The television website said Simpson was at a family event over the weekend.
The station quoted the Paraclete High School principal, John Anson, as saying Caleb was taken off life support.
Roughly 700 students turned out Sunday for a prayer service in the school gym, according to CBS2. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Lancaster.
Skateboarding in neighborhood streets, known as "bombing," has become a growing problem in San Pedro, according to neighborhood councils.
Late last year, 14-year-old Michael Borojevich was injured while skateboarding near Western Avenue and 25th Street in San Pedro. He died 11 days later."
