2/24/2012- this goes even further than I thought! I just found this article about the same scam in Florida.
And my neighbor received ANOTHER call, different voice, but with the same ruse. And then a contractor at her home told her he had the same thing happen, over in Redondo Beach.
2/23/2012 - I received a call from a group saying they represented the LA Firefighters. I told them I didn't believe them and said goodbye.
2/17/212 - A couple of my neighbors each got a new SCAM call: "Hello, grandma? It's ME, your grandson".... "oh, really? I forgot your name, what is it?" "Oh come on grandma!" "Well, my grandson is 18months old you little creep and I'm calling the police!" (click........)
This happened to TWO of my neighbors, who just both happen to be retirees and they BOTH have phone & cable bundled through the same, our local cable company. One caller claimed to be a nephew. The phone numbers were blocked so these ladies couldn't get any info, unless they would have somehow played a long.
Please warn your family & friends, specially those who are seniors. We hear way too often that they slip up and give info of some kind to these people, not even realizing it.
Not sure what the callers were up to, but report them or hang up.
Hopefully there hasn't been a database breech and there is anything really scarey to this.
