WHITE POINT LANDSLIDE - JANUARY 2012 REPORT

Los Angeles City Engineer, Gary Lee Moore, briefed me Friday morning on the status of the White Point Landslide.

The briefing included a 300-page Preliminary Geotechnical Report which provides a summary of the progress of the investigation and monitoring but offered no analysis, just facts of the current situation .

"I am pleased to report that we have seen no ground movement on the surface or at any of our deep well monitoring locations," Moore told me.

According to the report, observation of existing ground cracks around the immediate edge of the landslide suggests that the ground within a few feet of the head of the landslide is tilting and crumbling and may fall toward the landslide. "That is to be expected since nature created such a new steep cliff," said Moore.

"We believe the projected landslide failure plane is about 100 feet deep in the area of the active landslide," wrote Shannon & Wilson, Inc, the geotechnical firm hired by the City to to perform the subsurface investigation of the landslide.

The best news in this report is that the homes around the landslide are are safe, but given the rain forecast this weekend, I would like to remind everyone to stay away from the landslide, especially the fenced off area.

The next report will detail what can be done with the landslide area going into the future.

Natural causes are always the safest explanation. Heavens forbid any liability to the City for a compromised sewer system. Call me a skeptic, but sometimes you have to look at other explanations using empirical data from an unbiased source.

@Danny Pierce, according to this morning's briefing I received from City Engineer Gary Moore, the water issue is still being investigated. He told me that they should know in the final report how much water had to do with the slide. He also stated that what seems to be the cause is natural erosion from the ocean. You may examine the report online here: http://eng.lacity.org/whitepoint/whitepointlandslide.htm

I saw that there was a sewer line that ran through the collapsed area. Could a fractured sewer line that caused subterranean erosion cause the instability that led to the landslide?
